NRF: Payroll & HR Officer

Job Description:

The National Research Foundation (NRF) supports and promotes research and human capital development through funding, the provision of National Research Facilities and science outreach platforms and programmes to the broader community in all fields of science and technology, including natural sciences, engineering, social sciences and humanities.
The South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (SAIAB), based in Makhanda/Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, is a National Research Facility of the National Research Foundation. SAIAB is world-renowned centre for the study of African aquatic biodiversity.
Purpose: Manage and maintain the SAIAB computerised payroll and assist the Human Resources Manager with human resources tasks (recruitment, leave, training, industrial relations and general HR tasks).
To function as a Payroll & HR Officer, supporting the HR Manager by organising, monitoring and executing general HR and payroll administrative processes required in order to support the needs of the business.

Key Requirements:

  • Matric with a National Diploma in Human Resource Management


  • Minimum of 5 (five) years working experience in a Human Resources Role.
  • Of these 5 years·experience, at least 3 years·experience must be using computerised payroll systems.
  • Solid understanding of good HR practices
    Knowledge of UIF & Workmen·s Compensation
    Knowledge and experience of personnel recruitment
    Desirable additional education, work experience and personal qualities:
    Extensive knowledge and skills of a computerised payroll and human resources system(ERP system)
    MS Excel and MS Word
    Financial skills
    Good organisational and interpersonal skills
    Well-developed oral and written communication skills
    Time Management Skills
    Ability to work without supervision
    Ability to deal sensitively with confidential material
    High degree of professionalism
    Integrity and friendly approachability
    Attention to detail
