Job Description:

The South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON) is a research platform funded by the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) and managed by the National Research Foundation (NRF).
SAEON is mandated to establish and manage long-term environmental observatories; maintain reliable long-term environmental data sets; promote access to data for research and/or informed decision making; and contribute to capacity building, including through science engagement.
This is a short- term 6-month PART TIME (seasonal) contract. Work will take place periodically from May 2022- October 2022 with an estimated 30-60 total days of work.

  • Purpose:
    The main purpose of the Job is to assist with household surveys, driving the survey team, assisting with general SAEON field work, including, but not limited to, assisting with the installation and maintenance of our instrument arrays under direction of SAEON technical teams and assisting students in field work.

Key Responsibilities:

  • ‡Assist with household survey under the direction of the survey team.
  • ‡Drive the survey team around during their official activities.
  • ‡Assist SAEON field operations under direction of SAEON staff, including but not limited to, instrument deployments, maintenance
    and data down loads, general observations and measurements.
  • ‡Assisting SAEON platform users, including students in their field work.
  • ‡Assisting with data capturing.
  • ‡Participate in community engagement activities as required.

Key Requirements:
Qualification:

  • ‡MSc in hydrology/ Micromet / Environmental science
  • ‡year research assistant / technical assistant work experience including field work activities and instrument maintenance.
  • ‡!years driving experience including off road driving (Valid code EC drivers·license/ equivalent) with a sound record of 4×4 off road driving experience.
    Experience:
  • ‡Demonstrated experience in working with teams under field conditions.
  • ‡Experience with household survey work/ working in rural areas advantageous
  • ‡Data capture and management experience.
  • ‡Experience in science engagement advantageous.
    Knowledge:
  • ‡Must be computer literate in the MS Office suite, GIS software packages. Ability to code will be an advantage.
  • ‡Working knowledge of hydrological and /or micromet instruments and their maintenance and operations highly advantageous
